What is podiatry?

How your feet meet the ground matters

Podiatry is the assessment of how your foot, ankle and lower limb interact with the floor, and whether that could be influencing your injury or pain.

By looking closely at how you move when you walk or run, your podiatrist can see whether the way your feet and legs move is contributing to the problem, and treat the cause rather than just the symptoms.

Our podiatrist works alongside our physiotherapists, so your podiatry and physiotherapy care can be joined up.

Your assessment

What a podiatry assessment involves

Podiatry uses gait analysis and an assessment of your muscle strength and joint range of motion to review how you move when you walk or run.

  • Gait analysis

A close look at the pattern of movement through your feet and legs as you move.

  • Muscle strength

Testing the strength of the muscles that control your foot, ankle and lower limb.

  • Joint range of motion

Checking how freely the joints of your foot, ankle and leg move.

  • Walking and running

Bringing it together to see how you move when you walk or run, and spot any abnormal movement patterns.

Treatments

Treatment that corrects how you move

If your assessment shows some abnormal movement patterns, your podiatrist can recommend a number of treatments:

  • Stretching

Targeted stretches to ease tightness that is affecting the way you move.

  • Strengthening

Exercises to build strength and control in the muscles that support your feet and legs.

  • Custom-made orthotics

In some cases, an orthotic: a device made for you that sits inside your shoe and changes how your foot and lower limb interact with the ground.
